"Typical" was the comment attached to this photo, taken Thursday night, May 31, at the Crossett School Board. Since it was my last meeting to cover, they had a fish dinner and a cake with my name on it. I noticed the photographer waiting to take a picture, so I went ahead and took a bite.
I'm moving back home to Ellisville, MS Wednesday, June 6, and will work for an area newspaper. Andrew is moving with me, will be a senior at South Jones High School and will graduate next year from the same high school I graduated from 39 years previous.
I'll miss Ashley County; I've been here for the most of the past 18 years. But it's so good to be going home. Now it's eager anticipation of the final move.
I'll post pictures here once in a while.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Rep. Mark Foley, a Republican from Florida, resigned Friday from the House, a day after a former congressional page questioned e-mails Foley had sent to him.

Foley apparently sent the e-mails in August 2005, when the male page was 16 years old.

"Today I have delivered a letter to the speaker of the House informing him of my decision to resign from the U.S. House of Representatives, effective today. I thank the people of Florida's 16th Congressional District for giving me the opportunity to serve them for the last twelve years; it has been an honor," Foley said in a written statement.

"I am deeply sorry and I apologize for letting down my family and the people of Florida I have had the privilege to represent."

In the e-mails, which were obtained by the Washington-based Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, Foley discussed a second page, saying "I just emailed [him]... hes such a nice guy... acts much older than his age... hes in great shape... i am just finished riding my bike on a 25 mile journey now heading to the gym... whats school like for you this year?"

Foley then asked the page for a picture.

The young man, who forwarded the e-mails to another congressional staffer, called the e-mails "sick, sick, sick."

"Maybe it is just me being paranoid, but seriously. This freaks me out," the page wrote in the e-mails obtained by CREW.

A spokesman for Foley told CNN the congressman acknowledged he had an e-mail exchange with the former page but flatly denied that it was anything inappropriate.

Speaker Dennis Hastert of Illinois said he supported Foley's resignation.

"He's done, as of now; he's done the right thing," Hastert said. "I've asked John Shimkus, who is the head of the Page board, to look into this issue regarding Congressman Foley. We want to make sure that all of our pages are safe, and the page system is safe."

"None of us are very happy about it," Hastert said.

According to GOP sources, Foley is concerned there may be other potential politically damaging e-mails or information out there and has concluded it's best not to run again for office.

Space Shuttle Sighting

Andrew and I saw the space shuttle/ISS Thursday night.
I knew we might have a good chance of seeing it. I went out around 9 but there was a little overcast, and the moon was lighting the sky.
So we went to the prairie (the best place for seeing storms, lightning, stars, etc.). We got there at 9:20 and about two minutes later, we saw it. I think we both saw it at the same time. I looked through the binoculars but before I could focus in on it, Andrew said "That's it."
Very bright, and damn fast. Of course, traveling around the earth at almost 18,000 mph, I knew it would be fast. But we were only able to see it for about three minutes or less. Even from our perspective, it was amazingly fast.
There is a chance of seeing it tonight (Friday, July 7) around 9:45. 32 degrees WSW, king of "right of the big dipper."

Even though I've taken pictures for over 30 years, I knew damn well I couldn't get a picture of it, but I snapped it anyway. What the hell. Here's the proof--the space shuttle is a sperm!

I thought I would get by another year with insurance on the house in Mississippi. I paid it last year, and it was good until this month. I got a premium notice from the company, indicating the policy would have my name. The premium also increased from $900 to $1,054. I sent a check and thought it would be covered for another year.
Got a letter today that the policy will be canceled July 15. And I'll a refund on the payment.
Dammit. I guess I was lucky to get by with insurance for the past year. Now what? They can't insure it because it's vacant. Too much of a risk to leave the house vacant with no coverage.

Last night at a star-studded and fun fun evening, the 2006 Blues Music Awards were given out in 25 categories. The evening's most honored nominee was the late Little Milton. His widow Pat was on hand to accept the four awards he received as a result of the votes cast by Blues Foundation members. The four awards are: Soul Blues Male Artist; Soul Blues Album for Think of Me; Song of the Year for "Think of Me" and Album of the Year, also for Think of Me. There were two other multiple winners. Legendary guitarist Hubert Sumlin took home two awards for--Best Guitarist and for Traditional Blues Album for About Them Shoes. First-time winner Paul Oscher was selected as the Acoustic Artist of the Year and his Down in the Delta was chosen as the Acoustic Album of the Year.
Other first time honorees included: Eddie Shaw, Al Kooper, Mookie Brill, Janiva Magness, Tab Benoit and Zac Harmon. The B.B. King Entertainer of the Year award went to Buddy Guy and the Band of the Year is Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers.

Damn and Slam But No Bam

Ever have something happen that makes you nervous to write about? Read on.
After supper last night, I was headed out the door to smoke. I stopped by the table in the living room by the door, got a cigarette and lighter, opened the door, and I saw it, curled up against the wooden door.
First, this: There is about a one-inch gap under the bottom of the storm door. It lets cold air in, but I block it off with something. Not energy efficient, I know.
Well, when I opened the door, a damn rattlesnake was curled up between the storm door and the wooden door, but his head and tail were still outside on the steps. I slammed the door, thinking I had probably broken the windows in the back of the house.
Went to the kitchen, got a broom, opened the door and tried to shove the snake out with the broom. It started moving, and rattling, I slammed the door shut again.
I told Andrew to get the 22, but we only had one bullet. I got the 410 (single action) and two shells. We went out the back and came around the front. Yep, still there.
The problem was I couldn't shoot it with the 410 because I'd blow the door to hell (which, now that I think about it, wouldn't have been a bad thing. At least, I would have had to buy another door). Andrew could see its head, but I had to get at another angle. I got up in the back of his truck (good thing because I didn't think the snake would crawl up in there with me). Andrew had a sword but I didn't want him to get too close.
But before Andrew shot, the snake crawled down the steps to the side, against the house, and he couldn't see its head anymore. I got out of the truck (yeah, I really did) but we couldn't see where it crawled to, because of azalia bushes (which I have heard attract snakes). That snake must have been at least 40 feet long, and as big around as a medium pine tree.
I stuffed an old pair of jeans against the gap and closed the wooden door. My project this weekend is to try to find a weather strip that will screw into the bottom of the storm door, and hopefully stop that kind of crap from happening again.
Shivers me timbers just writing about it.

"Now Hurricane Katrina ("the second coming of Camille") threatens to do the same (As Hurricane Camille did in 1969). Except now, there is a lot more commercial build-up along the Coast, including casinos, which are closing ahead of the storm. Damn, it must be bad when casinos close. They're taking out the money and the slot machines. Jim Cantore on the Weather Channel Sunday morning said Treasure Bay Casino in Biloxi (the one built like a pirate ship) will probably be destroyed."

Prophetic? Hardly. I, unlike so many of our supposedly trusted officials, listened and knew what was going to happen. What I knew would happen did occur. Unfortunately, it went way beyond that.

Yes, Treasure Bay Casino was destroyed, along with most other buildings along Highway 90 in Biloxi, Gulfport, Waveland, Pass Christian, etc. A lot of those that weren't destroyed can't be saved.

Katrina's winds in Ellisville, MS, my hometown, were estimated at 114 mph. A neighbor's tree crashed destroyed the back yard fence when it crashed through. The new fence is nearly completed. I still have to have a cyclone fence on the north side of the back yard repaired. No damage, however, to the house or shop. There has been a lot of cleanup in town, but more to go. Most fallen trees and their debris are now gone. About the only things remaining are the horrible memories these people went through, and those damn "blue roofs." No telling how far behind roofers are.

It was good to hear boogity, boogity, boogity again Sunday (and in the Busch race, too). But that was the only redeeming value about Fontana. Cookie cutter track=boring. Kurt Busch spun out, and didn't even take anybody with him. What's up with that?
Tire problems for Stewart, and then a blown engine with about 35 laps left.
Andrew read off the top with about 20 laps to go, and I didn't want a damn one of them to win.
What to look forward to in Nascar this week? The Busch race in Mexico City. Wow, what excitement!

NASCAR on Tuesday suspended crew chief Chad Knaus for the next three Nextel Cup races for modifying the rear window of Jimmie Johnson's car before qualifying for the Daytona 500.
Hendrick Motorsports owner Rick Hendrick said Monday morning that barring unforeseen circumstances, the organization would not appeal what they feel is a certain NASCAR suspension of crew chief Chad Knaus.
Knaus, who was ejected from the 500 for the infraction, will miss this week's race at California, the March 12 race at Las Vegas and the March 19 race at Atlanta.
He also was fined $25,000 and placed on probation until Dec. 31.

I don't like a Nascar season starting off with a Jimmie Johnson win. At least it indicates Chad Knauss isn't necessarily "the man."
Junior's made a good, early showing, in the Bud Shootout, the Gatorade duel and Sunday in Daytona. He indicated to Sadler he would help him out, but Sadler never made a move. Junior did, but didn't get any help. Hope he'll have a good season.
Kyle Bush was black-flagged Sunday. He needs to be black-balled.
Tony the new Intimidator? He definitely won't take any crap, especially from a punk like Kenseth, who got Stewart sideways about 20 laps into the race. LEXINGTON, Kentucky (AP) -- John Michael Montgomery was arrested early Thursday and charged with driving under the influence and possession of a controlled drug, jail officials said.

The 41-year-old country singer also was charged with having a prescription drug not in its proper container, two counts of carrying a concealed deadly weapon, disregarding a traffic control device and improper turning, said Darin Kelly, a spokesman for the Lexington jail.

Kelly said the police report listed the controlled substance as Endocet, which is a painkiller.

Montgomery was arrested after being pulled over at an intersection of in the south end of town and was later released from custody several hours later, Kelly said.

The singer's publicist, Erin Morris of Morris Public Relations in Nashville, Tennessee, said Montgomery didn't have any immediate comment.

Montgomery, a Kentucky native, had several No. 1 hits in the 1990s including "I Love the Way You Love Me," "I Swear" and "Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident)."

WASHINGTON (Reuters)--President Bush wants $75 million to try to spur democracy in its adversary Iran, expanding a program that skeptics say can have little effect in the Islamic republic.
"The United States will actively confront the aggressive policies of the Iranian regime. At the same time, we will work to support the aspirations of the Iranian people for freedom and democracy in their country," Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told a congressional budget hearing.
Rice said the funds would be used to broadcast U.S. radio and television programs into Iran and pay for Iranians to study in America. She requested the money in a supplemental budget request for fiscal year 2006.
Congress has already approved $10 million for such programs for the year, which begins October 1.

Right in front of the trail cam, and the damn cam didn't even get a picture.
I didn't think Monday morning on the way to work to get a picture of the truck when it went off in the ditch near Berea Deer Camp. Andrew dodged a deer, instead of hitting it. All he hurt was his pride.
Cost $100 to get it pulled out and brought to town. No damage. He's now looking for a job.

Project Graduation Help

Hamburg's first Project Graduation is planned for this year. There will be an article in the paper next week asking for volunteers, fund-raisers and donations. Does anybody have any ideas how local bloggers could help, maybe with a fund-raiser of some kind? Please comment with any suggestions.

LOS ANGELES - The Walt Disney Co. said Tuesday it is buying longtime partner Pixar Animation Studios Inc. for $7.4 billion in stock in a deal that could restore Disney’s clout in animation while vaulting Pixar CEO Steve Jobs into a powerful role at the media conglomerate.

Disney’s purchase of the maker of the blockbuster films “Toy Story” and “Finding Nemo” would make Jobs Disney’s largest shareholder. Jobs, who owns more than half of Pixar’s shares and also heads Apple Computer Inc., will become a Disney director.

“With this transaction, we welcome and embrace Pixar’s unique culture, which for two decades, has fostered some of the most innovative and successful films in history,” Disney Chief Executive Robert A. Iger said in a statement.

Disney has co-financed and distributed Pixar’s animated films for the past 12 years, splitting the profits. That deal expires in June after Pixar delivers “Cars,” and it had once appeared the companies would not renew it amid friction between Jobs and former Disney CEO Michael Eisner.

But the talks revived under Iger, who became Disney CEO last October. Disney, the theme park owner that also owns the ABC and ESPN TV networks, and Pixar had discussed a new relationship for months.

Pixar Executive Vice President John Lasseter will become chief creative officer of the animation studios and principal creative adviser at Walt Disney Imagineering, which designs and builds the company’s theme parks.

Lasseter began his career as a Disney animator and is the creative force behind Pixar’s films. He will report directly to Iger.

As many trees as Plum Creek and other timber companies cut, why would some idiot want to burn timberland? It's simply beyond my comprehension. I've seen a lot of things hard to comprehend in my 31 years in the newspaper business, but this is one of the hardest.
This only means timber companies will now have to cut more trees to make up for the loss. I don't know, but I would guess this scorched land will take even longer now to grow replacements.
Also, the dry winter has allowed loggers to stay in the woods, cutting even more trees.
The shit only gets smellier.
